For the next 20 days, we’ll take a look at 20 drivers who we expect to break out in the 2020 racing season. Check out all of our 20 in ’20 posts right here!
WHO: Supercross/Pro Motocross 450 rider #9, Monster Energy Kawasaki
2019 RESULTS: 2nd, 250SX West, 211 points; 10 starts, 5 wins, 6 podiums
1st, 250MX, 519 points; 12 events, 6 wins, 12 podiums, 7 moto wins
WHY HE’S ON THE LIST: Cianciarulo’s Supercross season may have ended in heartbreak after rotten luck in Las Vegas, but winning half the events he ran and dominating the outdoor season meant that there was no way he wasn’t moving up from the 250 class for 2020. Monster Energy Kawasaki put him on a 450 alongside Eli Tomac starting at October’s Monster Energy Cup, and he promptly responded by staring down his more experienced teammate and taking the victory.
That makes Cianciarulo potentially an even more interesting 450 rookie than even the extremely deep 2019 class headlined by Zach Osborne, Aaron Plessinger, and Joey Savatgy. The real question is if he can prove himself able to break out of the team trend of putting a hurting on the Pro Motocross field, but being unable to close the deal indoors. It’s something that has haunted Tomac throughout an otherwise marvelous 450 career, but Cianciarulo’s big win to start his career on the big bikes suggested that he’ll be pushing his new teammate pretty hard in 2020.
