WHO: Best in the Desert driver #1903, Quintero Racing
2019 RESULTS: 1st, UTV Production, 705 points; 6 starts, 5 wins, 5 podiums
WHY HE’S ON THE LIST: Few desert racers can ever lay claim to a perfect season, but the 17-year-old Quintero came thisclose to doing it in Best in the Desert action in 2019. If not for an unlucky break in Laughlin, he’d have accomplished one of the sport’s most unlikely feats before even becoming a legal adult. He did it by just about every means possible, from holding off Bret Ward by just a few short minutes at the Mint 400 to winning General Tire Vegas to Reno by just over 40 minutes.
Quintero clearly has both the natural driving talent and patience behind the wheel to be a force in desert racing for years to come. The biggest question is when he makes the move up to a Turbo vehicle. There’s no rush for either of his two biggest sponsors to move him up, as both Red Bull and Polaris RZR have talented drivers in the premier UTV division, but the past year suggests that he’s ready to make a move whenever he wants to. Could we see Quintero returning to the Production class to take care of unfinished business in 2020, or is his dominant 2019 campaign enough reason for him to jump up sooner rather than later?
