Best in the Desert: Laughlin Desert Challenge Recap
Defending UTV Turbo champion Mitch Guthrie Jr. took his first win of the 2020 Best in the Desert season on Thursday in the UTV Night Race, the kickoff event of this year’s Laughlin Desert Challenge. Guthrie equaled Parker 250 winner Phil Blurton in the win column, but Blurton retained the points lead with a runner-up finish. Ryan Piplic completed the podium, as the top nine finishers were within 10 minutes of one another.
In UTV Production, Kolton Hustead scored the victory by a narrow 34-second margin over defending class champion Seth Quintero, with Eric Brisco in third. Defending UTV Unlimited champion Michael Isom also scored a class win with a 16-minute margin of victory over Gilberto Rodriguez, while Larry Heidler scored the class win in the six-lap UTV Rally class and Daniel Mackey finished as the lone UTV Sportsman starter.
UTVs return to action on March 20-22, once again in Laughlin, with the Jagged X National Desert Cup. The new, supercross-style format will feature four-lap heat races, three-lap last chance qualifiers, and a six-lap final for each Pro UTV class.
